The esoteric establishment of the meridians in the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) of the acupuncture and Moxibustion arts have long been lost in Chinese mythology dating back over 5,000 years. Today the practitioners of these arts strive to regulate and balance the Chi energy field they claim permeates throughout the body by using the meridians unquestionably and the application of needles, heat and vibration to open Chi blockages thus promoting a healthy energy-balanced body.
Western medicine’s skepticism concerning the meridian’s function and layout is that they cannot be identified by current scientific diagnostics. The effectiveness of the needles used, while in place, may be increased by applying hand vibrations, heat with smoulding moxi balls or excitation with a gentle electric current.
Moxibustion is a similar treatment but instead of penetrating the skin with sterile needles – heat is applied via burning moxicones directly to the skin at the defined meridian points. This unfortunately frequently leaves blisters and scaring.
However both treatments have the same aim of balancing the body’s Chi energy channels so that the body can return to its natural healthy harmony.
