The endocrine system via a series of glands is the body’s control mechanism. The endocrine system tends to control the slower movements and adjustments in your body, while quick, snap changes are motivated and controlled by your nervous system. This system regulates practically every function, cell and organ in the body via controlling messengers which are specialized potent chemicals called hormones.
This system is both extremely powerful yet simultaneously fragile. The main glands of the endocrine system are:
» pineal gland, located in the brain, controls the body’s circadian rhythm (our wake / sleep cycle) and the female reproductive monthly cycle.
» pituitary gland, located in the brain, regulates the female sex hormones via the regulation of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH) which in turn controls the estrogen and progesterone production in the ovaries. This system controls the female reproductive capacity, commencing with puberty, then menarche and through the reproduction years including pregnancy onto final menopause. The ovaries also produce progesterone which influences many body factors. In addition, the pituitary gland produces human grown hormones (HGH) which regulates the body’s growth and continuous maintenance program.
» testosterone, produced mainly in the testes regulates male sexual characteristics, including libido and all aspects of being masculine, including bone mass, fat and hair distribution, muscle mass and strength .
» adrenal glands, produced mainly just above the kidney helps regulate blood pressure and cardiovascular function plus part of the metabolic system. The Adrenal gland is itself regulated by the hormone Adrenonortiotrophic Hormone (ACTH) generated in the hypothalamus section of the brain.
This gland also produces the precursor hormone DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) which modulates antioxidant enzymes production in the livet, relieves stress plus strengthens immune system.
» the thyroid located in the neck, produces the hormone thyroxine which regulates the metabolic process.
With the aging process the hormone levels after puberty tend to plateau, then they commence a slow steady decline until there is an acceleration of the downward direction once people transcend the 60-65 year old threshold. Hence one anti-aging treatment attempts to remedy this degrading situation by Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) to compensate from these hormone declines with infusion of external sources of substitute hormone. These hormones may be bio-identical to the human’s normal hormones or completely synthetic.
