Preserving via diet, hydration or supplementation the body’s correct acid (PH less than 7.0) – alkaline (PH greater than 7.0) balance is critical to maintaining health. The body achieves digestion in a highly acidic environment, while the remaining parts of the body, including circulating blood, are adjusted to operate in the alkaline pH range of 7 to 7.4.
Most naturopathic doctors believe that this essential healthy balance should be achieved by the correct selection of foods within a well-balanced diet. For example: animal proteins, sugar, caffeine and most processed foods have an over acidizing tendency, while foods, mainly in the fruit and vegetable categories, such as lemons, watermelons, mangos, grapes, leafy greens, beans and pumpkins, can counteract the acidizing effect of the former group and thus assist in bringing the body towards a stable and healthy alkaline balance.
Naturopathic medicine also holds that an acid system is unhealthy and conducive to disease and accelerated aging, while a prevalently alkaline system is conducive to a healthier state where intercellular functions operate at their optimum efficiency.
For millennia man has survived and adjusted to a natural diet while living in a pristine environment. However, today, with ever changing social demands, increased affluence and the popularity of commercialized foods, commonly termed “the Western Diet”, man no longer lives in a world for which, via evolution, he was biologically fashioned. Man now has the burden of surviving while trying to compete with an even more demanding and frenetic world, and living in an environment invaded with pollutants, while consuming foods that are less nutritious than his forefathers.
In addition, our body’s chemistry is also influenced in part by our own emotional sentiments. It is claimed that positive and pleasurable feelings, such as joy, love, satisfaction, etc., promote alkaline forming reactions throughout our body, while negative feelings and animosity, as well as enduring long term stress that is so evident in today’s society, conversely promote acidic responses.
One of the biggest components of existence, and thus a significant factor in health, is adequate hydration. Fluids constitute 75% of the body’s entire make up, while water accounts for 57%-60% of the body’s make up in an average healthy person. Blood is 92% water, the brain and muscles are 75%, and bones about 22%. Babies are 75% water and obese people as low as 45%. Water is indeed the essence of life! So the quality of the fluids we drink, particularly the water we consume, plays a very significant factor in our essential acidic-alkaline balance.
